Smallbatch Pets Recalls Frozen 2lbs Chicken Blend For Cats And Dogs Due to Salmonella

May 5, 2017 – Smallbatch Pets Inc. is voluntarily recalling 2 lots of frozen 2lbs chicken blend for dogs and cats due to potential salmonella contamination.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the contaminated products and humans are also at risk when handling the products, especially if you don’t wash your hands thoroughly with soap afterward.

Recalled products:

The 2-pound bags of recalled products were sold frozen and distributed to retail pet food stores in the states of:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Oregon
  • Washington

The recalled products have the following ‘Manufacturing Codes’ and ‘Best By’ dates, which are located on the back of the package:

  • Lot: D032
    UPC: 705105970974
    Best By: 2/1/2018
  • Lot: E058
    UPC: 705105970974
    Best By: 2/27/2018

Two hundred eighty-two cases of this product were sold between the dates of 2/1/17 and 5/5/17.

Why recalled? Due to Possible Salmonella Health Risk.

Notes:

  • This is a voluntary recall and no illness has been reported to date due to the recalled products.
  • Routine collection of a sample and testing was done by the FDA on 2-pound bags of Smallbatch Chicken Blend which revealed the presence of Salmonella.
  • You should read and follow the simple handling tips on the smallbatch packages for proper disposal of the affected products.

What to do?

  • If you have purchased the recalled products, stop feeding them to your pets and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
  • If you are not going to return them, trash them immediately in a safe manner (in a trash with a lid so no animals can get to it).

About Salmonella Bacteria:

  • Salmonella can affect animals eating the products.
  • There is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
  • Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
  • Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
  • Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers immediately.
  • Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.
  • Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
  • Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
  • If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
