February 13, 2018 – FDA and Washington Department of Agriculture is investigating Arrow Reliance Inc. for a string of Salmonella and Listeria Monocytogenes contamination in raw pet food manufactured by companies like Darwin’s Natural Pet Products and ZooLogics Pet Food.
From October 16, 2016 to February 10, 2018 there has been numerous salmonella and listeria contamination recalls of raw food from the same companies.
The latest of these recalls was made on February 10 2018 where Arrow Reliance (Darwin’s Naturals) recalled ZooLogics Duck with vegetable meals for Dogs (lot # 41957) and Zoologics Chicken with vegetables meals for dogs (lot # 41567) due to salmonella. And this is what the Gary Tashjian, the Founder of Darwin’s Pet Product, had to say about the recent recall.
Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can affect animals eating the contaminated products and humans are also at risk after handling the products, especially if you don’t wash your hands thoroughly with soap afterward.

Recalled products:
- The company states that they only sell their products online through direct-to-customer-sales.
- Six complaints of illness and death in animals has been investigated by the FDA regarding this latest recall. The latest recall and investigation was initiated when a dog had reoccurring diarrhea for over 9 months, which was fed this product over this time period. Other complaints of previous recall was also related to death of a kitten and other severe salmonella cases. Follow up testing by FDA’s Vet-LIRN on the dog and the food confirmed the presence of salmonella.
- Even though there has been no public announcement notifying this (or any other recalls), the company has notified its customers directly by email, of all the recalls.
- The manufacturing dates and lot codes of all recalled products are printed on the packages.
What to do?
- If you have purchased products from Arrow Reliance inc. or any of its related companies and the lot codes match, discontinue feeding it to your pets.

- If you are not going to return the products in question, trash them immediately in a safe manner (in a trash with a lid so no animals can get to it).
- If you have kept the recalled food in the refrigerator, you should clean your refrigerator too. You should disinfect the surface where you prepared the food including utensils, bowls, pet toys, bedding and any other surface that may have come in contact with the recalled food, including floors.
- Because this bacteria can be shed when your dog has bowel movements, it is also important to clean up animal feces in your yards (as well as local parks, if you take your dogs there).

- Canadians can report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
About Listeria monocytogenes:
- Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
- Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
- Healthy cats and dogs rarely become sick from Listeria. If animals get ill with Listeria they will display symptoms similar to the ones listed above for humans.
- People who have concerns about whether their pet has Listeria should contact their veterinarian.
About Salmonella Bacteria:
- Salmonella can affect animals eating the products.
- There is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
- Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
- Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
- Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers immediately.
- Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.
- Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.
- Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
- If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
