Where To Adopt A Pet In Grand Prairie, Texas

Grand Prairie Texas Pet Adoption: Best Shelters And Rescues

Are you excited for the upcoming grand opening of the ‘ilovepets.co’ store in Grand Prairie, Texas?

Or do you still need more animals in your life to shop for and spoil?

There are many wonderful places to adopt a cat, dog, rabbit, lizard – any type of pet in Grand Prairie and Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington (DFW area). So many animals need a permanent home and it won’t be long before you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them.

Why You Should Adopt A Pet In Grand Prairie

Responsible breeding has its place, but adoption is an excellent option for adding new animal members to your family.

When you buy a pet from a store or from a random backyard breeder on Craigslist, you’ll have to pay more to cover vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery and a microchip. Shelters and adoption centers include these costs in their adoption fees, meaning it’s almost always cheaper to adopt.

Are you worried about adopting a pet with a past?

You may wonder if it’s better to avoid adopting an older pet that may have had an abusive former owner. A traumatic past could cause behavior issues that your family cannot handle.

However, not all adoptable pets were seized from animal abusers. Every pet has a story. Some were given up when their loving owner passed away. Some of their owners may have had a baby, a career change, or a new home that made it impossible to keep them.

Raising a young kitten or puppy is time-consuming and difficult. It also does not guarantee that you’ll raise an animal free of behavioral issues. An older adoptable pet may already have had some training, or may already love children from living with their old family.

Ask a shelter worker, foster or rescue person to help you find the right fit for your family. Whether you have kids, other pets, a small home or a big yard, you can find an adoptable pet who will fit right in.

The Problem With Buying Animals On Craigslist

Buying a pet on Craigslist is a gamble. Some families use it because they are desperate to rehome a beloved pet.

If you need to rehome your pet, reach out to your local shelter and rescues and ask them to help you find your pet a new home. They’ll be able to use their social media channels, word of mouth and vetting process to help you, and you can keep your pet at your house until they are rehomed.

There are myriad issues that come with animal sales on Craigslist.

It is illegal in Texas to sell a puppy or kitten under 8 weeks old, yet some people are currently selling pets as young as 6 weeks. They may be desperate to rehome their quickly-growing, difficult-to-care-for litter, or they may even mislead buyers into believing they are purchasing older puppies and kittens.

Puppies and kittens need to stay with their mother and littermates until 8-10 weeks, even if they are no longer nursing. As they play with their mother and littermates, they correct one another if they scratch or bite too hard. A pet that leaves home too soon may be prone to scratch and nip when they play.

Craigslist sellers may also sell animals with behavioral issues or health issues or may lie about the animal’s breed.

  1. […] While you are here, don’t forget to visit the GO TO web page for people looking to adopt a pet in and around Grand Prairie/ DFW area: Grand Prairie Shelters And Rescues. […]

  2. Is there a specific rabbit rescue group in Grand Prairie?

    1. Hi Tara,

I don’t know a specific rabbit rescue group in Grand Prairie. What I suggest you do is go to petfinder.com and do a search. Here I did a search and found some closer to Grand Prairie – http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelterid=TX466

And here are some other ones that might interest you. I see a lot of rabbits up for adoption in these sites. Some are not that far from Grand Prairie.

Or if you do social media like Facebook, post saying you want to adopt a rabbit. I have no doubt there are people who can’t take care of their rabbit anymore, for whatever reasons, and want to give it away.

Hope that helps and let us know how it turns out for you. All the best and Thank you.
