Fromm Family Foods of Mequon, Wisconsin is voluntarily recalling three of its canned dog foods due to high levels of Vitamin D. Through their own analysis, they discovered that affected canned food did not have the recommended levels of Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is essential in regulating the balance of calcium and phosphorous in dog’s body. But if Vitamin D is ingested in higher levels, serious poisoning can occur. However, Vitamin D toxicity due to higher level of Vitamin D in dog food is rare.

Why recalled? due to high levels of Vitamin D.
Notes:
- This is a voluntary recall by Fromm Family Foods.
- The recalled products were shipped to distributors from December 2015 through February 2016.
- While there have been no reports of any health problems, Fromm recommends the affected products not to be fed to pets.
- Vitamin D poisoning through food is pretty rare and can occur in situations where the dog has eaten the affected products as their only meal for extended period of time.

About high levels of Vitamin D:
Vitamin D is essential in regulating the calcium and phosphorous balance in dog’s body. This regulation helps in bone formation, nerve and muscle control. But if vitamin D is ingested in higher levels, serious poisoning can occur.
Vitamin D toxicity due to higher level of Vitamin D in dog food is rare. It can occur only in situations where the dog has eaten the affected products as their only meal for extended period of time. The most common causes of poisoning is due to excessive use of Vitamin D dietary supplement and accidental ingestion of rodent-killing chemicals.
The symptoms of Vitamin D poisoning includes Vomiting, Weakness, Depression, Loss of appetite, Increased thirst, Increased urination, Dark tarry feces containing blood, Blood in vomit, Loss of weight, Constipation, Seizures, Muscle tremors, Abdominal pain, Excessive drooling.
Serious Vitamin D Poisoning may require immediate treatment and hospitalization. The best way to prevent vitamin D toxicity in dogs is to keep rodent-killing agents out of your pet’s reach and consult your veterinarian before changing your pet’s diet and/or starting it on a vitamin D supplement regimen.
